CGST vs SGST vs IGST
How India's federal tax structure splits revenue between the Centre and States.
What is GST in India?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system, introduced on 1 July 2017 to replace multiple indirect taxes including VAT, excise duty, and service tax. It follows the principle of "One Nation, One Tax" — a single framework across all states.
GST is a destination-based tax, meaning revenue accrues to the state where goods or services are consumed, not produced. It is also a multi-stage value-added tax with credit for tax paid on inputs.
Real-Life Calculation Examples
Example 1: Restaurant Bill
Aditi orders food worth ₹2,000 at a Delhi restaurant. GST rate is 5%.
- GST = 2,000 × 5% = ₹100
- CGST ₹50 + SGST ₹50
- Total: ₹2,100
Example 2: Inter-State E-commerce
Karnataka seller ships a phone worth ₹25,000 to Tamil Nadu buyer. GST is 18%.
- IGST = 25,000 × 18% = ₹4,500
- Total: ₹29,500
Example 3: Luxury Car (40% Slab)
Luxury sedan at ₹15,00,000 attracts 40% GST under GST 2.0.
- GST = 15,00,000 × 40% = ₹6,00,000
- Total: ₹21,00,000
Example 4: Reverse Calculation
Grocery item displays ₹525 inclusive of 5% GST.
- Net = 525 × 100 ÷ 105 = ₹500
- GST = ₹25
GST Registration: Who Must Register
Turnover Thresholds
- Goods suppliers: ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in special-category states)
- Service suppliers: ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states)
Mandatory Registration (Any Turnover)
- Inter-state suppliers
- E-commerce sellers (Amazon, Flipkart)
- Reverse-charge mechanism cases
- Casual taxable persons
- Non-resident taxable persons
Composition Scheme
Small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore can opt for flat rates: 1% (traders), 5% (restaurants), 6% (services). Quarterly returns, no ITC, no inter-state supplies.
Input Tax Credit (ITC) Explained
Input Tax Credit is the heart of GST — it lets registered businesses offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales.
How ITC Works
A furniture maker buys timber for ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 GST. Sells a table for ₹15,000 + ₹2,700 GST.
- GST collected: ₹2,700
- GST paid on inputs: ₹1,800
- Net to government: ₹900
Tax is paid only on the ₹5,000 value added — not the full ₹15,000.
What's NOT Eligible
- Motor vehicles for personal use
- Food, beverages, club memberships
- Goods used for exempt supplies
- Personal consumption items
Frequently asked.
Quick answers to the things people ask us most.
How do I calculate GST in India?+
To add GST: GST = (Net × Rate) ÷ 100. For ₹10,000 at 18% = ₹1,800 GST, total ₹11,800.
To remove GST: Net = (Total × 100) ÷ (100 + Rate). For ₹1,180 inclusive at 18%, net is ₹1,000, embedded GST is ₹180.
What are the current GST rates in India 2026?+
Following GST 2.0 reforms effective 22 September 2025, India has four main slabs: 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%. Special rates of 0.25% (rough diamonds) and 3% (gold) also apply. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs have been merged.
What's the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?+
CGST + SGST apply together on intra-state transactions, splitting equally — 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
IGST is a single component for inter-state and imports. Total tax burden is identical, only destination differs.
Is this calculator free?+
Yes, completely free with no signup or hidden charges. Calculate as many times as you want.
Do I need to register for GST?+
Mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for services). Inter-state suppliers and e-commerce sellers must register from day one regardless of turnover.
What is Compensation Cess?+
An additional levy on luxury and sin goods (tobacco, aerated drinks) charged on top of regular GST. Under GST 2.0, many cess items moved to the new 40% slab.
What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?+
ITC lets registered businesses offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales. You only pay tax on the value you added, preventing tax-on-tax cascading.
Is the calculator accurate for invoicing?+
The math is exact and reflects current GST 2.0 rates. For specific item classification, verify with a CA or the official CBIC portal.
Which goods are exempt from GST?+
Daily essentials: fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, unbranded grains, healthcare, education, books, life and health insurance, 33 life-saving drugs. Alcohol and some petroleum remain outside GST entirely.
